the weekend: {acl2011}

Well Saturday will be hard to top. I had a great weekend and I must share. I’m a little bummed it’s all over.

The festival.

I’m still in shock as to how Saturday happened. First I had tickets to see my favorite band everrrr on Saturday and could have died happy. Then among the selections on my “acl2011” playlist, I jam to Fitz & The Tatrums and Arcade Fire’s most recent albums all week to gear up for the weekend {don’t knock it}. Get super excited about them only to further score tix at the end of the week with a great friend to both of these bands’ shows after ACL. #whattheheck #pinchmeplease

Saturday in reverse order….

Fitz & the Tantrums after show. Motown danceparty. Their opener Aloe Blacc was a blast as well.

An AWESOME taping of Arcade Fire at ACL theater. So much talent, so much fun, so much craziness. I missed Stevie Wonder for this and totally made the right choice.

Live, up close, musical perfection. Truly a dream come true to partake in a performance by the greatest
voices and instrumental mastery on this side of heaven… Alison Krauss & Union StationDan Tyminski at the guitar on the right, Ron Block, Jerry Douglas left on the dobro and Barry Bales on bass. I got choked up. I took videos. I will relive them.

Oh plus friends. Dear fun friends! {thanks for taking pictures!}

In addition to Fitz and the Tantrums, Aloe Blacc and The Belle Brigade, a playlist here with more of my favorite highlights from Austin City Limits.

Back to the grind! My life is never this cool. Tomorrow I have plans to pick up some dog food and vacuum my living room. #lesigh

back to school

School starts tomorrow!

Today I will be enjoying a hair cut and shopping for a pen pouch {It’s true. I’m picky}. I may also take a nap. I may spend some time enjoying the two eye candy nuggets I found in my mailbox Monday morning.

S’more?! A teacher gift + puns? Not much can top that.

I carry my officeclassroomfilecabinet in a bag. And my shoulder hurts. I really need a backpack or maybe one of those super cool rolling teacher box systems. Oh heavens.

How fun is this? Sometimes I wonder if the only reason I want to have kids is to make fun food and do artsy crafts.

Tina Fey’s mother’s prayer. So great.

According to j.crew’s blog, whiich you should be following, madewell has joined the party.

Austin food trucks have spread to my ‘hood. Excited to try.

Let’s get our burger definitions straight. This is a must when people attempt to quantify the “best burger.” We need categories.

After traveling the last two weekends it was lovely to have a simple and slow Saturday. We walked to the lunch spot. FedEx delivered our art souvenirs, and we took them to get framed. And when the Redbox rental failed to comply with our requests to play, we watched Cars. Love me a good Pixar flick. Penelope spent the day working on the slow destruction of  a new lamb sussy I got her on Friday. chewchewchew.

Turns out Taylor dislikes the yellow Sour Patch Kids. When I cleaned up after the movie, I found a little bowl of yellow Sour Patch Kids on the table next to his chair. Weirdo.

How about some Sunday links?

On another note, this is a great article in Texas Monthly.

I want to do this, and I love how the article starts.

Please, go play with this. And annoy your spouse. You won’t regret it.

Is anyone surprised that I love this site?

What’s on Taylor’s brain these days besides link #1? This. Heaven help us.

Back to School Open House tomorrow! Happy Sunday!

the northwest | part two | glacier national park

August 18, 2011 § 2 Comments

We hiked for three days through the backcountry trails of West Glacier National Park. True story.  Needless to say we learned a lot about the limits of our bodies (and perhaps minds) shlepping huge packs for 6-14 miles each day….we also saw some beautiful views of lakes, mountains and glacier waterfalls as we hiked along Bowman Lake and up the Continental Divide through Brown Pass.

The drive along Going to the Sun Road was also amazing and breathtaking. Endless mountains, cliffs, lakes and waterfalls. While I think we both decided that doing it differently we would have planned less distance between each camp site so we could have spent more time without the packs, at the campsites and on day hikes, we loved the cool air, stunning scenery and sharing the adventure of it all together. One of our favorite parts of the week was driving from the park back to Washington. It was just a chill four hours driving west with the sunset, surrounded by unadulterated nature, mountains, rivers, trees, plains, rocky foothills, sprinkled with the rugged old buildings of a few quaint old towns along the way. It was a welcome and much needed break from not only hot, dry Texas weather but from constant, racing technology and the daily to-do lists.

{Holcomb Vacay Check}: Together. Cool weather. Pretty scenery. Long sunsets. River Crossings. Shlepping. Trail Mix. No cell service. No showers.
{Next Holcomb Vacay Resolved}: Together. Cool weather. Pretty scenery. Long sunsets. Upscale, non-portable accommodations. Rolling luggage. Waiters. No bear bells. No mosquitoes. Hot water.

the northwest | part one | coeur d’alene

Last Saturday we flew in to Spokane, Washington and headed right outside the city to Coeur D’Alene, Idaho for a few days. After the trip through Glacier National Park we returned to Coeur d’Alene before flying back to the atx on Saturday.

Lake Coeur d’Alene was amazing. as was the view from my morning coffee, my lunch complete with huckleberry lemonade and the golf course. Taylor drove me through the golf course after he enjoyed a round with our hosts while I enjoyed a massage and the pool.

We strolled the town, ate, and bought some art, relaxed in the park by the huge lake and soaked up the amazing weather.

See you next week! We are off to Coeur d’Alene, Idaho then Glacier National Park in Montana!

We are so excited about the epic scenery and the cool air. Part of our trek should take us into Canada too!

Yes. There are bears and we are hoping they don’t desire to come this close to us.

Not to worry (?) We have one of these and some of this.

Our impressive menu includes Louisiana Red Beans and Rice, Chicken and Vegetable Risotto and Turkey Tetrazzini. At the bottom there, we have “apples” and up in the top right, I mixed oatmeal with some of the strawberry and banana variety….

Soooo rugged. Stay tuned for some undoubtably great stories.
